What is a canonical URL?
A canonical URL is the preferred version of a page when similar
or duplicate URLs exist. It is declared with the
<link rel="canonical"> element to help
search engines understand which address should represent the
content.
How this check helps
The checker evaluates only the URL text you paste. It finds format errors and signals worth reviewing, such as query parameters, fragments, uppercase letters and duplicate slashes. The result does not replace checking the tag in the published HTML.
Limits of static validation
The tool does not access any website. It therefore cannot confirm whether the URL returns HTTP 200, redirects, is blocked from indexing or appears in more than one canonical tag. Review those points in the published environment.
Common canonical mistakes
Relative URL
A value such as /product depends on the page
context. Prefer the complete URL with protocol and domain.
Multiple canonicals
More than one canonical tag can send conflicting signals. Keep one consistent tag per page.
Query parameters
Parameters may point to a campaign or filtered variation. Remove them when the clean version is the preferred page.
Fragment identifiers
Content after # identifies part of a page, not a
separate canonical page. Do not include it in the canonical
URL.
Mixed HTTP and HTTPS
Choose HTTPS when it is available and use the same version in links, sitemaps and canonicals.
Canonical pointing to a redirect
A canonical should point directly to the final URL, not an address that redirects. This tool does not test redirects.

Is an HTTP URL invalid?
Not necessarily. It is a valid URL, but HTTPS is recommended when the secure version is available. Keep one consistent version across the site.
Can I use query parameters in a canonical URL?
In some cases, yes. The warning exists because tracking, filter or sorting parameters often do not represent the primary page version.
Why do uppercase letters trigger a warning?
Paths can be case-sensitive on some servers. Use a consistent convention and preserve the form that actually exists on your site.
Does this tool check redirects?
No. All processing happens locally and no URL is accessed. Confirm redirects separately in the published environment.
